What Teaching Across 15+ Colleges Taught Me About Creative Voice

Observations from guest seminars across India: why technical perfection without narrative curiosity leads to sterile images, and how students can find their personal style.

What Teaching Across 15+ Colleges Taught Me About Creative Voice

Over the past several years, visiting institutions such as the National Institute of Design, St. Xavier's, and Whistling Woods has been one of the most rewarding parts of my journey as an educator.

Young creators today possess access to unprecedented technological power. An entry-level mirrorless camera today has higher dynamic range and low-light capability than the cinema cameras used to film Oscar-winning features twenty years ago.

Yet, amidst this abundance of technology, the danger of visual conformity is real. Algorithms reward repetition; social media feeds encourage copying trending color palettes.

At RAP Education Photography School, our foundational exercise is stripping away the presets. We ask students to spend three days photographing with a single fixed focal length lens, black-and-white preview only, and natural light. When you take away the crutches of post-processing tricks, you are forced to look at geometry, emotion, and gesture. That is where authentic voice begins.
